How to Make Natural Kitty Litter

Most commercial cat litter is made with harmful chemicals and can damage the environment, not to mention your own felines. A natural kitty litter helps save you some money and gives you the added benefit of not damaging the environment. Homemade kitty litter is biodegradable and is changed just as easily as store-bought generic litter. Making the cat litter is a 30-minute process that you could do weekly or monthly, in bulk.

Instructions

    • 1

Shred recycled newspaper in a paper shredder and collect it in an unused cat litter box. If you don't have newspaper lying around, go to a nearby recycling bin and get some. Ask friends and neighbors to save their newspapers for you, too.

    • 2

Soak the newspaper in warm water with a few squirts of biodegradable dish soap. Let the paper soak until it becomes the consistency of oatmeal.

    • 3

Drain the water using a colander and repeat the warm water soak, but without the use of dish soap. Drain it again with a colander.

    • 4

Put on your gloves. Liberally apply the baking soda into the wet paper and knead it into the mixture. Squeeze as much of the water out of the mixture as you can with your hands.

    • 5

Place the crumbles over a screen and let them dry for a day. When using it as a litter, cover the litter box with about an inch of newspaper crumbles. Scoop the solids out of the litter when needed.
