How to Remove Cat Urine & Feces Smells

Your cats can quickly become part of your family. You may treat your cats as you would one of your children and, like a child, your cats may at times have accidents. Unfortunately, cat urine and feces can create odors throughout your home that seem to never disappear. Instead of absorbing the cost of replacing the soiled item or paying for expensive cleaning treatments, try a cleaning solution that uses inexpensive household products.

Things You'll Need

  • Washable Items:
  • Laundry detergent
  • 16 oz. baking soda
  • Urine Odors on Carpet &Upholstery:
  • Black light
  • ½ cup white vinegar per stain
  • ½ cup water per stain
  • Plastic gloves
  • Paper towels
  • Newspaper
  • ½ cup baking soda per stain
  • Spray bottle
  • ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide per stain
  • 1 tsp. liquid dish detergent per stain
  • Scrub brush (optional)
  • Vacuum

Instructions

  1. Machine Washable Items

    • 1

      Add the laundry detergent to the wash according to the product's instructions. Add 16 oz. baking soda or pet odor neutralizer to wash as well.

      Add the soiled items to the wash. Launder the items per their tag instructions.

      Remove the items from the wash. Smell the items. Launder the items again if they still smell. Hang the items to dry.

    Urine on Carpet and Upholstery

      Locate any old cat urine stains using the black light. Combine 1/2 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup water. Pour the solution over old and new stains.

      Put on your gloves. Fold the paper towels together to create a thick pad. Place the pad on top of the stain. Fold the sheets of newspaper together to create a second pad. Place the newspaper pad on top of the paper towel pad. Place a third pad of newspaper under the soiled area if possible.

      Stand on top of the padded area or use your hands to press down on the pads and soak up the liquid. Refresh saturated pads with new paper towels and newspapers pads as needed. Repeat this process until you have soaked up as much of the liquid as possible. Remove and discard the pads.

      Apply 1/2 cup baking soda to each stain. Pour 1/4 cup peroxide and 1 tsp. liquid detergent into the spray bottle. Spray the mixture over the baking soda.

      Work the mixture into the stains using your fingers or a scrub brush. Allow the mixture to sit on the stains overnight. Vacuum the area the following day.

    Feces on Carpet and Upholstery

      Combine 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup vinegar. Pour the mixture over the stained area.
