Instructions
Put a box of cat litter next to your litter box. Measure the length and width of both of them. Measure your cat's height and the height of the litter box. These measurements will help you pick the appropriate size stool or bench to cover the litter box and box of litter.
Cut a foam cushion to fit the top of the stool and adhere it to the stool with spray adhesive.
Cut a piece of fabric 1 inch larger on all sides than the top of the cushion. Cut a strip of material 2 inches wider than the depth of the cushion and long enough to wrap around the cushion. This will be the band around the sides of the cushion. Sew the two pieces together and place them on the cushion to check the fit. The fabric cover should fit the cushion snugly and hang down an inch below the top of the stool.
Decide whether you want a gathered or pleated skirt. Measure from the bottom of the cushion to the floor and add 4 inches. Measure around the top of the stool. Cut fabric strips as wide as the measurement from the cushion to the floor plus 4 inches and long enough to go around the stool twice. You may have to sew two or three pieces together.
Sew a 3-inch hem in the skirt. Sew a half inch hem at each end. To make a gathered skirt, sew two lines of stitching an inch from the top of the skirt and pull the threads to gather the fabric to fit around the stool with a 1-inch overlap to make a door for the cat. Sew the skirt to the cushion cover.
If you want a pleated skirt, hold your pleats in place with pins and fasten the pleated skirt to the cushion cover with pins also. Overlap the ends about an inch to form a doorway for the cat. Sew the skirt to the cushion cover.
Put the finished cover on the stool and fasten trim around the bottom of the cushion to cover the seam where it connects to the skirt. Place the pretty stool over the litter box and hide the supplies under there too. Show it to your cat. To clean the litter box, simply tip the stool over on its side. Put it back when you are finished.
