How to Get Rid of Cat Litter

Cleaning a litter box is the most unpleasant task associated with owning a cat, as most cats use the litter box between three and five times each day. An unclean litter box creates noxious odors and dust, both of which are harmful to the health of humans and cats. Since cats are fussy animals, your cat can be repelled by a dirty litter box and may choose to litter elsewhere in the house. Therefore, to maintain the health and wellbeing of both your cat and your household, it's important to regularly clean the litter box.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a multi-cat, clumping litter even if you own a single cat. This type of litter effectively controls odors and also clumps into a ball once the cat has urinated or defecated, thus enabling you to easily scoop up and get rid of the waste and litter.

    • 2

Wear disposable rubber gloves whenever you handle the litter box. Scoop out the clumped balls of urine and fecal matter from the litter box daily with a metal or plastic scooper. Place the clumped balls in a plastic bag and dispose of them in an outdoor trash container.

    • 3

If clumped balls of urine and fecal matter stick to the sides of the litter box, shift the litter away from the stuck clumped balls and remove it from the litter box, if necessary. Gently tap the side of the box to dislodge the clumped balls into the scooper.

    • 4

Spray the litter box with a diluted bleach solution, in a 1:30 ratio, and wipe soiled areas with a paper towel. Allow the box to dry and refill it with litter.

    • 5

Replace the litter every two to three weeks. Using a mild liquid detergent and hot water, scrub the litter box thoroughly every time you change the litter.

    • 6

Sprinkle nontoxic carbon crystals on the litter whenever you replace it. Carbon crystals are dust-free and naturally absorb unpleasant odors.
