How to Troubleshoot a LitterMaid Mega

The LitterMaid Mega LM900 or LM950 litter box automatically rakes through clumping litter to scoop clumps into a waste receptacle, saving the owner the unpleasant process of scooping dirty litter clumps, according to the LitterMaid website. Unfortunately, like any machine, sometimes the LitterMaid Mega can have mechanical problems that prevent it from functioning properly. Some solutions are simple, while others require a bit more examination of the machine. Keep your LitterMaid Mega working correctly with some simple maintenance and troubleshooting techniques.

Instructions

Use only clumping litter in the LitterMaid Mega litter box, because other litter types will cause the machine to malfunction. Since the principle of the LitterMaid is to automatically rake the clumps of litter into the waste receptacle, other types of litter will simply be swept into the receptacle, leaving a puddle of urine in the box. LitterMaid recommends using a high-quality clumping litter and sells its own brand of litter that works specifically with the automatic litter boxes on its website.

    • 2

Fill the LitterMaid Mega with clumping litter only to the fill line shown on the sides of the box. Overfilling the box will cause the rake to stall or the sensors to malfunction. Under-filling the box (significantly below the fill line) will result in clumps that stick to the bottom of the box, stalling the rake, or puddles of urine, and requiring hand-cleaning.

    • 3

Wipe down the two sensors, located on the sides of the box, weekly to keep them in good working order. If sensors are blocked by dirt or litter, they will not sense your cat using the box or trigger the rake to cycle. Check sensors regularly to ensure they stay clean and wipe down with a clean, soft cloth to avoid scratches.

    • 4

Make sure the AC adapter functions properly. Check that the outlet the LitterMaid Mega is plugged into works correctly by testing it with another device. Look at the connection of the adapter to the LitterMaid Mega, ensuring it is plugged in to the side of the box all the way into the slot marked "AC adapter." If the unit is receiving power, the red light in the top-left corner will be on with the power switch in the "on" position.

    • 5

Check batteries if using this as your primary power source or backup source. The unit requires eight D batteries. When batteries are running low, the unit's power light will flash. Replace the batteries.

    • 6

Spray the litter pan and rake lightly with cooking spray to prevent litter clumps from sticking to the bottom, sides and corners of the unit after cleaning it and before filling it with litter. This not only prevents litter clumps from sticking to the surface of the box, but also from stalling the rake, which results in the red power light flashing if the rake is unable to complete a rake cycle.

    • 7

Check the switches on the unit if the rake has stalled at the front or end of the box and will not reset if you switch the power button off and on. The switches are located on the upper corners at the end of the box and the upper corners of the top of the box (where the rake usually rests). They look like thin strips of metal and, when pressed, make a clicking sound. Ensure all switches are free from obstructions such as litter by pressing on each one several times to free the debris.

    • 8

Look at the switches at the top of the box (where the rake usually rests) if the unit cycles continuously without stopping. Wait until the rake reaches the end of the box, turn the power switch to "off" and test the switches by pressing on them to free debris. Take the brush included with the LitterMaid and brush away any litter built up along sides of the box and top corners to remove any obstructing litter preventing the rake from returning to its home position. Turn the power switch to the "on" position and the unit should now function properly.

Empty or change receptacles when full to prevent the unit from overflowing or malfunctioning.
