How to Build a Cat Hammock

A cat hammock not only provides your cat with a comfortable location to nap, it can also help keep it clean and dry if your animal spends any time in a pet cage or carrier. Cats can easily get away from any spilled water or food in the bottom of the enclosure by climbing into their cat hammock. Best of all, the hammock is machine washable and easy to remove should any messy accidents occur.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four strips of fabric measuring 4 inches wide and 8 inches long.

    • 2

Fold each strip of fabric in half with the right sides together to create a 2-inch by 8-inch strip. Iron the folded fabric strip to set a crease.

    • 3

Sew along the 8-inch long raw edge of each strip with a sewing machine. Turn each strip right side out after sewing.

    • 4

Fold a standard size pillowcase in half lengthwise and iron along the fold. A standard size pillowcase is usually 30 inches by 20 inches, so your folded pillowcase should measure approximately 15 inches by 20 inches.

    • 5

Fold each fabric strip in half lengthwise and tuck the unfolded edges in between the pillowcase layers at each corner. Insert the strips approximately 1 inch into the pillowcase and pin them into place.

    • 6

Sew along each side of the pillowcase using a 1/4-inch seam allowance and a zigzag stitch. Sew over the fabric strips as you go to secure them to the pillowcase. This will create a fabric loop at each corner of the cat hammock.

    • 7

Insert a key chain ring or binder loop into each loop at the corners of your pillowcase.

    • 8

Attach the rings to the top of a wire pet cage or animal carrier or the bottom of a wire shelving unit to hang your cat hammock.
