How to Make a Solar Cat House

Outside cats need just as much love and care as an inside kitty. Unfortunately, many outside cats do not have adequate housing to keep them warm at night. Providing a heated cat house will protect your cat from the harsh winter weather. Furthermore, creating a solar cat house for your kitties is relatively expensive and can be accomplished in a few short hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubbermaid storage container
  • Tape measure
  • Box cutter
  • Styrofoam
  • Non-solvent glue
  • Mylar survival blanket
  • Blankets
  • Solar pool cover

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a doorway into the longer side of a large Rubbermaid container. The doorway should be 6in. by 6in. and should be cut near the corner of the container, several inches from the bottom.

    • 2

Cut Styrofoam to the appropriate measurements of the inside of the container including the doorway. The Styrofoam will line the inside of the container so it needs to go all the way to the top of the container. Cut out another piece of Styrofoam that will rest on top of the wall pieces.

    • 3

Glue a Mylar survival blanket to the Styrofoam pieces. The Mylar will need to be facing the inside of the container so it can reflect the cat's body heat back onto itself. Use glue that does not contain a solvent.

    • 4

Line the inside of the Rubbermaid container with the Styrofoam pieces. Place blankets on the bottom of the container. Place the top Styrofoam piece on the container and secure the lid.

    • 5

Cut an old solar pool cover to the correct measurements. The solar pool cover needs to cover the outside of the container. Wrap the cat house with the pool cover. Pool covers are designed to attract and retain heat to keep the pool water warm.
