How to Build a Playpen

If you would like your pet to be able to play outside but are afraid of them escaping or getting into places they shouldn't, create a playpen that will keep them enclosed while giving them room to run around. Build a simple playpen by connecting modular wire shelves; they come in a variety of sizes and can be pieced together to create any size of animal playpen. These playpens can also be used indoors and are easy to disassemble, transport and reassemble.

Determine what size of shelves you need. Shelves can be used horizontally for animals that don't need a lot of height. In this case, the shelf width would be the playpen height. Wire shelves typically come in 18- or 24-inch widths. Shelves can also be used vertically for animals that do need higher walls to contain them. For dogs, 36- to 48-inch long vertical shelves will usually suffice. Sixty- to 72-inch long vertical shelves will accommodate cats that like to climb.

Design your playpen. You playpen can be a simple square shape, or it can have more maze-like qualities. Shelves can also be placed on the roof of the playpen to keep climbers in and unwanted visitors out, or the playpen can be left open at the top. Determine how many shelves you need to buy based on the desired dimensions of the playpen.

Construct the individual walls by connecting the wire shelves end-to-end with cable ties. Overlap the ends slightly to prevent gaps. Place a cable tie approximately every 8 inches. If you need a door on your playpen, leave one seam between two shelves disconnected. The cable ties will allow the door to swivel open. Use a couple jumbo metal binder clips to secure the door closed.

Have a friend or two help you erect the walls. Connect the walls at the corners with cable ties. Attach the roof shelves, if applicable, and connect them with cable ties.

Line the ground if necessary. Linoleum or outdoor carpeting or turf can be used and are easy to clean. The cage can also be secured to the ground with metal stakes if necessary.

Add interior furnishings if desired. For example, a cat playpen can include a climbing post. If the animal will be in the pen for extended periods of time, include a food and water dish, and a litter box.
