How to Keep Litterbox Smelling Nice

You love your cat, but you can't stand the smell of a dirty litter box. You may have tried different sprays to deodorize the area, as well as carpet powders and even harsh chemical cleaners on the litter box. Other approaches can keep the litter box smelling fresh. By adopting them, you'll reduce the number of air fresheners and sprays you use.

Clean the litter box often. Remove feces and urine from the litter with a plastic bag and litter scooper daily. Dump the plastic bag in an outside garbage can right away so the filled bag does not start to smell inside your home. Change the litter completely about once a week.

Use a clumping litter with fragrance added. The scents are light, but they help cover bad smells in the box. Clumping litter will stick to the urine, causing it to coagulate for easy removal. The litter also will surround the feces and reduce the smell.

Sprinkle baking soda in the litter. Cover the bottom of the litter box with baking soda, and then fill the box with litter as usual. Use a little bit between full litter changes to help freshen the contents after a cat uses the box.
