Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the type of door you wish to install. You will need to make a decision before purchasing materials. Most homeowners choose either their back door or patio door, which is easy for cats to go in and out of.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of your cat. You will want to do this so you have a doorway that is large enough for your cat to fit comfortably through. Since most cats gain weight during their lifetime, you will need to make a doorway that is larger than your cat.

    • 3

Purchase a template for a custom cat door to help you easily install a cat door.

    • 4

Attach the pet door template to the bottom of the door. Then choose a height that is easy for your cat. With a pencil, trace the inside of the template.

    • 5

Remove the template, and place an X in each corner. This will allow you to use the marks when attaching the cat door̵7;s metal frames. With a jigsaw, cut along the pencil lines to create an opening.

    • 6

Install the outer frame first. Use caulk on the outside to create a seal to prevent water leaks and other damage.

    • 7

Attach the pieces of the inner frame using the marks you made earlier. Then insert the plastic door. Make sure the flap is on the inside.

    • 8

Attach any hardware. Test to see if the door works correctly before you allow your cat to use it. Should your cat be unsure about how to use it, simply move the flap back and forth until he gets the idea.
