Littermaid Automatic Litterbox Troubleshooting

Your LitterMaid automatic litter box should work correctly to sort the litter and gather the soiled litter in a collection area for your disposal. Three main problems might cause you to need to troubleshoot the automatic litter box. It might stink more than it should, it might not sift and collect the lumps of waste or it might not work at all.
  1. Stinking

    • The LitterMaid automatic litter box should not stink unless your cat has used it within the past minute. If you notice a smell coming out of the litter box, there are a few ways to troubleshoot the box. Change the filter first because it accounts for most of the smell-related problems. Next, check the trap box. Although it is automatic, you need to empty the box at least once every few days. The waste in the box should not stink, but once a few days have passed, it will emit smells. If this still does not solve the problem, completely empty the box and scrub it. It could be that a bit of stinky waste has been stuck somewhere in the box or in the mechanism.

    Sifting

    • If the box works but does not sift piles of waste as it should, unplug it and take apart the sifting mechanism by gently pulling it away from the box. It should snap off and on. Check it for clogs because often pieces of waste end up stuck on it and cause it not to sift properly. Also, fill the box with more litter because too little litter does not provide the right height the mechanism needs to sift piles of waste.

    Not Working

    • If the box does not work at all, make sure that it is plugged in. Then, test the electrical outlet to which it is plugged in because the culprit could be an outlet-related problem. If the box still does not work, disassemble it and reassemble it according to the directions that came with the box. If the box still fails to work properly, contact the store you purchased it from for a replacement.
