Decorating Ideas for Disguising a Litter Box

Even people who love cats have a hard time figuring out what to do with the litter box. There's just no good place to put it, and they are difficult to disguise or decorate. Even if you do find a good corner to place it, litter boxes are just plain ugly. But you can decorate and disguise a litter box a number of ways.
  1. Litter box furniture

    • One of the most decorative and easiest ways to disguise a litter box is to place it inside a piece of furniture. There are litter box furniture manufacturers, and your local pet store probably sells them. Many are disguised to look like planters, cabinets or end tables. You can even use a real end table or cabinet if it has a door; just insert the litter box in the table or cabinet and leaving the door slightly ajar. In fact, many cat owners place a litter box under the sink or in a private bathroom that guests don't use, such as in the master bedroom bath.

    Screens and plants

    • Surround the litter box. Use a screen, such as a fireplace screen, which are usually just the right size. Or surround the litter box with real or silk plants tall enough to hide the box. Your cat will enjoy foraging through the plants to get to the box. If you use real plants, however, your cat may also use the dirt in the pots instead of the litter box!

    Cat condos and more

    • Finally, think about using something you already have to decorate and disguise your litter box. For example, many cat condos are large enough to disguise a litter box. Simply place the box behind or inside of the cat condo. Most cats do not mind having the box near where they play or sleep. You can put a litter box behind a piece of furniture, such as a bookshelf. Finally, consider installing a kitty door in your garage door, and placing the litter box in the garage. It will keep your indoor cat safely inside as long as you make sure the garage door is not open.
