Basics
-
You will need to have a few basic supplies before you bring your cat home, such as a litter box, food and water dishes, and, of course, litter and food to fill them.
Identification
-
All cats, indoor or outdoor, should have a collar with current rabies tag and a contact phone number or address.
Grooming
-
Cats spend a lot of time washing themselves, but there are a few spots where even the most fastidious tabby could use some help. Long-haired cats will enjoy having a soft brush, but just about any cat will need a flea comb on occasion.
Considerations
-
Make sure inside cats have a scratching post or pad and use nail trimmers designed for cats to help keep their claws short. If your cat cannot keep from scratching furniture, consider a product such as Soft Paws, which covers the paws without harming your cat.
Recreation
-
Don't forget toys. Catnip mice, climbing trees, cat beds and feathery toys may not seem to be necessary, but they encourage your cat to stay physically and mentally active.
Transport
-
Make sure to have a cat carrier for each cat. These are important for regular vet visits, grooming and boarding, but it is also important to have your cat carriers within easy reach for evacuations due to hurricanes, fire or floods.

Supplies for Cats
Cats have an air of self-sufficiency about them, but there are a few things that every cat, and thus every cat owner, will need. These range from cat food to catnip mice, but each is important to your cat.
