How to Measure a Cat for a Harness

Training a cat to go outdoors on a leash is easier than you may think. All you need is patience; a long, lightweight leash; and a comfortable harness that fits properly. Your cat will be happiest with a harness that buckles or snaps around his neck and middle, rather than slipping over his head. Since these harnesses come in several sizes, you need to measure your cat before you buy one. Compare your measurements to those on the packaging, which should tell you both minimum and maximum lengths for the adjustable neck and middle-body straps.

Measure your cat's neck with the tape measure snug against her fur. Add about 5 percent to the actual inches around her neck. Give her a couple of treats to reward her for her cooperation.

With the cat standing up, measure around his middle, just behind his front legs. Again, add about 5 percent to the actual inches. After being measured, your cat will need a few more treats as a thank-you for his continued cooperation.

Save your measurements so you can use them again when you purchase a harness. The harness will be easier to adjust to the right size if it's not on the cat.
