Identification of Urine Spots: You can purchase a black light at most pet stores (PetSmart, PetCo, your local store, or even at an online store). Scan the black light over the top of the areas you think are affected by the urine- you will notice the area will turn a bright bluish-white color. Now you know where to begin treating the odors.

Treatment 1- Vinegar and Water: Start with the most basic (and least expensive) method of cleaning cat urine stains. Fill a spray bottle with 1/2 water and 1/2 white vinegar and shake well. Spray over the affected areas and allow to dry. If there is a large quantity of urine, you may want to pre-treat by scrubbing the area with soap and water, then follow up with the vinegar and water mixture.

Treatment 2- Enzyme Cleaner: Many pet stores sell an enzyme based cleaner that will supposedly break down the bacteria that causes the odor in pet urine, and over the course of a couple of hours the smell will diminish. Just as with Treatment 1, make sure to pre-wash the area with soap and water then put the enzyme cleaner on the spot and allow it to dry. This is useful on carpet; however, is not recommended on surfaces such as your bed due to the chemical smells that may be emitted for days after the treatment.

Treatment 3- Organic Cleaners: Many organic cleaners have been popping up throughout the pet supply market. These cleaners typically include animal-friendly (and people friendly) ingredients that don't give that typical chemical smell or feel to the cleaning products you are using. There have been several organic products developed to diminish and eliminate pet smells for fabric, clothing, furniture and flooring and are typically effective in eliminating odor without leaving much residue.

Treatment 4- If those don't work, hire a professional: Many times our home remedies just can't get out the stains efficiently. If that happens, it just may be time to bring in the professionals. Although a professional cleaning service may be a bit more expensive than taking care of the problem yourself, it is worth the time, effort and discomfort you will save yourself, your family, your guests and your pets.
