How to Build an Outdoor Cat Enclosure
Identify the window you will be using for the cat window enclosure. The instructions here will tell you how to build a cat enclosure for a window that opens vertically. The can easily be adapted for a window that operates horizontally.
Pick a window in a room that is both easy access for you and one your cat enjoys.
Measure the space. The cat enclosure will be able to be removed from the window, so it should not take up the entire space. Ideally, you will use a window that is a couple of feet wide and one or two feet high. Whatever size the window is, the cat enclosure will be six inches shorter and a half inch narrower than the space. These are very important measurements, so keep track of them.
Cut the sheet of plywood to the width of the window minus a half inch, as noted above. The cat enclosure will become unstable if it is longer than three feet, but you should cut it six inches longer than that. The maximum length of it, then, would be 42 inches. For an example, we will say that the window is 18 inches wide. The base that you will cut out of plywood could be 3 feet long and 17.5 inches wide. Cut two 2x4s to match the width of the window, minus 5 inches, and one 1x4 to match the width of the window. Cut four 2x4s to match the height of the box as you have determined it. Finally, cut two more 2x4s the length of the base minus 11 inches.
Assemble the box. Affix two of the vertical 2x4s using screws at the two corners of one end of the base. This is the outside edge of the platform. Measure six inches from the opposite end of the platform and screw the other two vertical 2x4s here. The other two 2x4s should be able to attach the two pairs of vertical struts using 4-inch screws. Use one of the two last lengths of 2x4 to bring the frame together on the outside end of the platform. Use the last strut to bring the inside end of the box together. You should now have a cube of lumber mounted on the platform. Place the 1x4 flat against the top of the inside of the box, leaving it overlapping the top. This lip will rest against the window at the top of the box and will hold the enclosure in place. If you place it flush against the 2x4 strut, it should be 1.5 inches above the rest of the assembly.
Bring it all together. Using the stapler, close the box in wire mesh. It is easiest to cover the box from one side to the other, and then use a separate sheet to cover the outside end. If you want, you can also staple in some carpet on the base for your cat's comfort.
Raise the window as far as it will go. Rest the enclosure on the window sill, with the six inches of extra base hanging over the windowsill. Lower the window until it rests on the frame at the top, holding the assembly in place. Slide the box outside until it holds snugly against the window at the top.
