Plant matter
The addax is a herbivore and obtains the majority of its energy from eating plant matter. It grazes on grasses, leaves, and shoots of desert plants. The addax is able to survive on very little water and can go for long periods of time without drinking.
Fat reserves
The addax also stores energy in the form of fat. This fat helps the addax to survive during periods of scarcity when food is not as readily available.
Behavioral adaptations
In addition to its physical adaptations, the addax also has a number of behavioral adaptations that help it to conserve energy. For example, the addax is active during the cooler parts of the day and rests in the shade during the hottest parts of the day. It also travels in herds, which helps to reduce the amount of energy that each individual animal needs to expend.
By combining its physical and behavioral adaptations, the addax is able to successfully survive in its harsh desert environment.
