How to Install the Filter on a Drinkwell Pet Fountain

The Drinkwell pet fountain has a 5-inch falling stream of water and a 50-oz. reservoir or bowl that pets can drink fresh flowing water from. A Drinkwell-brand pet fountain uses a motorized pump to aerate water and a filter to keep the water tasting fresh for your pets. Charcoal located in the filter removes odors and chemicals present in tap water that cause it to taste bad.
  1. Installation

    • Pull the fountain housing cover or lid up and off the housing. Rinse the filter with cold water to remove any loose charcoal dust that may be in the filter. Inspect the new filter cartridge to determine which end is the narrow end. Insert the filter, narrow end first, into the filter groove slot located in the well of the fountain. The black side of the cartridge should be facing toward the spout of the fountain. Do not force the filter cartridge into the slot; if the fit is too tight, remove the filter and insert it into the next groove slot of the fountain well.

    Finish Installation

    • Replace the fountain housing and fill the well of the fountain with fresh tap water. Plug the fountain in to turn on the pump motor, then add more water to the fountain until you hear a soft hum coming from the motor. Turn the flow rate control knob, located on the side of the fountain near the ramp of the bowl until the water is flowing at the desired stream strength.

    Clean Regularly

    • Dissemble the parts and rinse out your Drinkwell pet fountain once a week with hot water to remove debris. Replace the filter of the pet fountain every six to eight weeks to ensure the best quality of water for your pet. Rinse out the filter with clean cool water when you wash your Drinkwell pet fountain to eliminate any debris that may be stuck in it.

    Warranty

    • Clean the fountain and internal motor cavity with hot soapy water every two weeks, or you will void the manufacturer's warranty. Limescale can form and algae can grow in the fountain and motor cavity. Buildup of the hard white substance called limescale can interfere with the function of the fountain's pump motor. Algae can clog up the inner tubes that transport the water in the fountain, so take care to thoroughly clean it out.
