Instructions
Remove the animals from the cage if applicable and place them in an alternative cage or other designated area where they will be safe from other pets, small children and the elements. If necessary, have a friend or family member keep an eye on the usually contained pets.
Remove all contents of the cage, including all water and food dishes, stones, wood and toys. Clean them as needed and place them in a designated area while you work on the cage. Empty the cage of wood shavings or other similar products, and throw them in the trash.
Place the cage in an area where you can easily clean it, such as your yard or driveway, your garage or a stone floor area of your basement. Rinse the cage with a hose if needed/applicable, and spray the entire cage with a vinegar and water mixture from a spray bottle. To make a vinegar and water spray, use a quarter-cup of vinegar for every cup of water. Vinegar is a highly effective, nontoxic cleaner that kills bacteria and destroys mold and mildew. Remove the vinegar mixture from the cage with a clean rag, which should also remove dirt, fur/hair, mold, mildew, bacteria and traces of waste. Spray and wipe down the cage with the mixture until it is completely clean.
Allow the cage to dry in the sun if possible, which will help it dry faster and work to kill any leftover mold and bacteria. Place fresh wood shavings or other litter material in the cage if necessary, along with the all the cage's "furnishings." Put the pets back in their home once you've fully cleaned, dried and reset the cage.
