How to Build a Cat Shelter Out of Wood

Cats that live outdoors or spend a lot of time outdoors should have access to shelter so they can get out of harsh weather such as rain or snow. Having a shelter also gives them a safe place to sleep or hide from larger or more aggressive animals. You can construct a simple wooden shelter to protect your pet cats or even give stray cats a safe, warm refuge.

Instructions

    • 1

Build a box. Measure and cut two pieces of plywood 20 inches long by 15 inches high. Cut two more pieces 22 inches long by 15 inches high. Nail the plywood together to form a box shape.

Create a door, floor, and roof. Cut a door in the front of the box 5 1/2 inches wide by 7 1/2 inches tall. This should be small enough to keep out most animals but large enough to accommodate your cat. Measure and cut two pieces of plywood 22 inches long by 20 inches high. This will be the floor and roof of the shelter. Secure the floor to the bottom of the box, using nails. Attach hinges to one side of the roof piece. Attach the roof to the box so that it can be opened and closed to access the inside of the shelter.

Add extra features, if desired. Create windows by cutting square holes into the sides of the shelter. Insert plexiglass into the holes and seal with wood glue or sealant. Paint the outside of the shelter to match your house or to blend in with your yard, if desired. For extra protection from the elements, attach non-toxic insulation to the insides of the walls of the shelter and cover the roof with shingles.
