Things You'll Need
- Empty cardboard box
- Box cutters
- Soft fabrics
- Pillow
Instructions
Choose a cardboard box to provide the frame for the bed. To determine what size box you should use, consider your cat's personality and habits. For example, some cats prefer smaller areas, while others like to stretch out and utilize a lot of space.
Ensure the box is clean from debris and does not have any water damage.
Cut off the top flaps of the box with box cutters if you choose to make an open-air bed. To make an entryway for your cat, cut out one of the box sides, leaving about 2 inches of space on the sides and bottom for support.
Use the top flaps of the box as a roof to create a fully enclosed cat bed. When the bed is finished and ready to be used by your cat, close the flaps to make the space enclosed. Cut a hole or archway into one of the box sides to make an opening from which your cat can enter or exit the box. The hole should be on or near the ground so that it is easy for the cat to go in and out.
Add soft fabrics by lining the bed with them so that the floor is soft and comfortable. You can use old shirts or sweaters, blankets or other soft fabrics you may have around the house. You may also insert a pillow into the box along with the bedding. Ensure the fabric you choose for bedding is clean before adding it to the bed.
Choose a location in your home for your cat's new box bed. Avoid drafty areas or places that may be subject to extreme temperatures. To encourage your pet to use the bed, it should not be near the litterbox. Like most animals, cats do not like to sleep where they eliminate.
Clean the bed on a regular basis. Disassemble the bed so that you can wash the bedding and brush hair and dirt out of the box. When you clean, take time to inspect the box for wear or damage. When the box becomes worn or too dirty to easily clean, replace it with a new box.
