How to Donate Crochet Blankets for Cats/Dogs

When cats and dogs come into an animal shelter, they are frightened and in need of comfort. Soft, crocheted blankets provide the animals with an item to snuggle and make them feel safe, but many shelters and rescue organizations cannot afford to buy or make these items. Dogs and cats given blankets to cuddle have better temperaments and become adoptable more quickly after they arrive at a shelter. If you have the skill and time to make these blankets, donate them to your local animal shelter to help their dogs and cats.

Contact local animal rescue organizations in your local area and ask them if they accept crochet blanket donations. Ask about any requirements for the blankets in terms of size or stitching preferences. Make arrangements to drop off or mail the crochet blankets to the organization of your choice.

Go to the Snuggles Project website and download and print the donation form. This project is run by the Hugs for Homeless Animals organization, a non-profit group based in Oregon that works with animal shelters around the world to organize the donation of blankets to them. Bring the form and your donations to local shelters participating in the project, listed on the website (see Resources).

Contact a non-profit organization that coordinates blanket donations to animal shelters in your area. Operation Blankets of Love is an area-specific organization that offers many drop-off locations at local businesses in the southern California area. These types of drop-off locations accept blanket donations during business hours and give the crochet blankets to local shelter and rescue organizations.

Organize or join a local crochet group and coordinate blanket-making with the other members of the group. Once you have made your blankets, donate them directly to a local shelter or non-profit organization that works with local shelters.

Volunteer with an animal shelter or animal rescue organization to help assess what supplies are needed by the organization in terms of blankets. Ask local businesses to act as drop-off locations for your organization and bring in the blankets that you or your friends have crocheted.
