How to Make a Cat Loot Bag

To many people, pets are not just furry friends, but an integral part of the family. Vacationing pet owners don̵7;t have to leave the family cat at a boarding facility; they can take it to a cat spa to receive some pet-pampering while away. It comes as no surprise that some cat-lovers hold birthday parties for their four-legged family members. Guests are treated to cat-friendly cake and treats and given "loot" bags to take home. Sew your own cat loot bags for a handmade favor that will be appreciated and remembered.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect fabric remnants or scraps; only 6 inches are needed to make one bag. For favors, figure 1 yd. of 45-inch fabric per six loot bags.

    • 2

Fold the fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides together and lay it on a flat cutting surface.

    • 3

Create a pattern out of tissue paper by cutting a rectangle that is 8 inches wide and 10 inches high.

    • 4

Lay the tissue on top of the fabric keeping it straight, not on an angle.

    • 5

Pin the tissue to the folded fabric and cut out the fabric to match the exact size of the pattern.

    • 6

Remove tissue pattern, replace pins to hold the two rectangle pieces of fabric with right sides together.

    • 7

Sew a straight seam across the bottom and up both sides of the bag.

    • 8

Remove pins and with the bag still inside out, make a 3/4-inch fold at the top of the bag toward the outside, all the way around. Pin or press the fold with an iron.

    • 9

Sew a straight 5/8-inch seam to hold the fold in place. While stitching, the two pieces should not be against each other as they were when sewing up the sides and across the bottom. Do not inadvertently sew the bag closed.

    • 10

      Turn the bag right side out and decorate using fabric paint. Paint a cat or write something catty like, ̶0;Cats rule, dogs drool!̶1;

    • 11

Fill the loot bags when dry. Place cat favorites, such as catnip, toys, treats and a sparkly new cat collar inside. Toss in some loot for the human guests/cat owners to enjoy too. Keep the items cat-themed, such as magnets, a mug, key chain or even a paperback book with a cat story.

    • 12

Gather each loot bag at the top and tie with ribbon, string, jute or a decorative bow.
