How to Make a Cat Holster at Home

Cat holsters can be a great way to keep track of your cat. When attached to a leash, cat holsters make a harness that allows your cat to roam, while still keeping it close by. Holsters are much less likely than a conventional collar and leash to choke the cat by pulling. Making your own cat holster allows you to choose patterns and colors to fit your cat's personality. You are also able to customize the size and fit of the holster so that your cat is comfortable and safe.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your cat around its neck, just above the shoulders and at the widest point on its torso. Add a half inch to each of these measurements to account for the Velcro attachment and hem. Measure it again from the center of its back, just above its shoulders, to the top of its hind legs. Add a quarter inch to this measurement for the seam. Write down these measurements.

    • 2

Sketch a pattern of the holster. The first measurement is for the top of the holster and the second is for the base. The third measurement is the length of the holster.

    • 3

Take the paper with the pattern and place it over your cat. Sketch a location on the pattern for leg holes. Cut out the pattern, including the leg holes.

    • 4

Place the pattern over the fabric. Make sure the fabric is big enough to fit. Cut the fabric along the paper pattern.

    • 5

Sew a quarter-inch hem all the way around the holster fabric. Cut the Velcro strips to fit the length of the fabric. Sew the Velcro on the left and right sides of the holster. Make sure to sew them on the back of the fabric to create a nice finish.

Cut a strip of unused fabric at least an inch wide to match the length of the holster. Sew a quarter-inch hem all the way around the strip. Position a metal key ring in the center of the holster. Lay the strip of fabric over the holster, putting it through the metal key ring. Sew the strip of fabric to the holster, stitching close to the key ring so it can't slip.
