How to Increase Bentonite Clumping

Bentonite is the main ingredient in many clumping kitty litters like Scoop Away, Precious Cat Ultra, and Arm and Hammer Super Scoop. The kitty litter uses the cat's urine as a binding agent, which allows the bentonite to clump together, making it more scoopable and less hassle to clean. There are steps that can be taken by the cat owner to help the clumping properties of the bentonite-based kitty litter.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour a quarter cup of water into the litter box around a small clump formed by your cat's urine which is too difficult to pick up or is crumbling apart from dryness. Bentonite granules absorb liquids and expand to at least 15 times their original size. Pour the water in one place, forming a large mass which can be removed.

    • 2

Stir the litter box granules with your pooper scooper after removing excrement to move the unused grains on the bottom of the box to the top where they will be able to absorb more moisture.

    • 3

Run a dehumidifier in the room where the litter box is located on a daily basis for at least two hours in the morning, afternoon and evening. For best results, let the dehumidifier run continuously. If the room has high humidity, the bentonite granules will absorb moisture from the air, making them less effective at clumping together when doused with cat urine. Removing some of the moisture from the air will dry the granules, increasing their effectiveness.
