DIY Soft-Sided Cat Cube

Many cats enjoy some privacy when lounging or sleeping and, by nature, they do spend a lot of time sleeping throughout the day and night. Although cubed beds can be purchased at your local pet supply store, it might be a more convenient and affordable option to make your own. The construction process is fairly simple and straightforward. Almost anybody with some basic carpentry skills can complete this project in an hour or two.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark the dimensions you want for your cube. There are no set dimensions needed. Measure the sides, top, bottom and back pieces. Mark the measurements with a pencil. The two sides will need to be equal in size, and the top and bottom will also need to be equal. The height of the back piece should be equal to the height of the sides. The width of the back piece will have to be equal to the width of the top and bottom.

    • 2

Cut the plywood pieces with a handsaw according to your markings.

    • 3

Connect the pieces of plywood with 90-degree brackets. Place the brackets in the interior corners of the cube. Secure the the brackets in place with screws. Insert and tighten the screws with a power drill.

    • 4

Trim the padding with scissors to fit the interior dimensions of your cube.

    • 5

Trim the flannel with scissors to approximately an inch wider than your padding pieces. Cut a piece of flannel for the front and back of each padding piece.

    • 6

Sew together three sides of each pair of flannel pieces. Leave the fourth side open. Complete a simple zigzag stitch with the yarn through both sides of the flannel.

    • 7

Insert the padding into the open end of each flannel pocket created in Step 6. Smooth and flatten the padding in the pockets with your hands.

    • 8

Sew shut the fourth corner of each flannel pocket with yarn and the same zigzag stitch used on the other sides of the flannel.

    • 9

Peel the backing off of the self-adhesive hook-and-loop strips. Press the sticky backs of the strips evenly spaced throughout the interior of the cube. Press the flannel against the strips. All interior sides of the cube should be covered with a flannel pillow to make a soft surface on all sides.
