How to Build a Cat Hideout

Almost any material lying around the house can be used to make a personalized hideout for your cat. The best hideouts are located in favorite sleeping spots and offer textures cats like to lounge on and rub against. To get the most from your cat hideout, use materials that are easily washable and weather resistant.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one 6-by-6-inch square out of one side of the storage container about 4 inches from the bottom and a little to one side. This serves as the door to the cat hideout.

    • 2

Attach Velcro tape to one side of the scratchboard.

    • 3

Attach the Velcro strip base inside the bottom of the plastic container just to the side of the opening.

    • 4

Place the cat-scratching pad on the bottom of the container, securing it with matching Velcro strips. This keeps the scratchboard in place during playtime.

    • 5

Sprinkle a little catnip on the scratcher, lay a towel down on the inside of the container right below the door and sprinkle a few cat treats inside the door.

    • 6

Secure the lid onto the container by snapping it into place. This serves as the roof of the cat hideout and a second shelf for perching and sleeping.

    • 7

Place the box under a window or in a favorite napping location, leaving a few treats near the cat hideout to encourage investigation.
