How to Apply Carpet to a Cat Tree

Cats scratch for many reasons, and they do so wherever they please. Scratching their claws on rugs, furniture, curtains and trees helps your cat condition its claws, stretch and even mark its territory. Since you cannot stop a cat from this natural behavior, your best option is to give it an acceptable place to scratch. Carpet-covered cat trees and scratching posts provide a great place for your cat to meet its instinctual needs, nap and play.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the base and the hole where the post is attached; cut the carpet needed to cover it.

    • 2

Remove the cylinder-shaped post attached to the base, if possible. If the post does not come off the base, cut the carpet so it will slip on around the post.

    • 3

Apply wood glue liberally to the base and firmly press the carpet down once it is in place.

    • 4

Flip the base upside down and fold down the carpet over the corners of the underside. Staple the carpet in place using four to five staples on each corner.

    • 5

Secure wood clamps along the sides of the base to help the carpet lie flat as the glue dries.

    • 6

Measure and cut enough carpet to cover the post.

    • 7

Apply wood glue to the post and tightly wrap the carpet around the post. Trim off any excess carpeting.

    • 8

Insert staples along the carpet seam, spacing them 2 inches apart.

    • 9

Follow the directions for covering the base if your cat tree has a platform at the top of the post that needs to be covered.
