Source a large cardboard box to make the kitty fort from. A square of around 20 inches on all sides should be a minimum for most cats. If the box has flaps on the top sides for closing, cut them off with scissors or a utility knife.
Sit the box open-side down on a work surface. Draw a door along one long edge of the box, around 1-foot square is fine. The bottom of the door should on the bottom edge of the box.
Cut out the door with scissors or a utility knife for the basics of your kitty fort.
Decorate the kitty fort by painting it with nontoxic paints and stapling hanging cat toys from the door or inside the roof of the fort. Position in your cat's favorite place in the house. A cat cushion inside the fort will make it more comfortable for your pet.
