Kitten Toy Ideas

Kittens are fun-loving, energetic pets. You can keep your kitten entertained and well-exercised by having an array of toys for it to play with. Plenty of play will help your kitten develop social skills and coordination while maintaining its physical and mental health. Use appropriate toys to play with your kitten to keep playtime safe.
  1. Catnip Toys

    • Catnip is a product that contains nepetalactone, which causes neurological stimulation in kittens and cats. Its smell is also enticing for them, so catnip is often included in kitten toys. The catnip is typically wrapped inside a stuffed toy or sprinkled on a scratching post to encourage scratching on a safe place rather than on your couch. Kittens will love playing "fetch" with catnip toys.

    Fishing Rod

    • Kittens will love when you play with them using an interactive toy like a fishing rod with an object attached to the string. Dangle the toy in front of them so that it catches their interest, then as they reach for it tug it away quickly so they go in for the chase. It is good for the kitten to run because it enhances its cardiovascular system.

    Balls

    • Your kitten will enjoy "hunting" ball toys. Hide them behind chairs or table legs with only a little bit poking out. This will ignite your kitten's "predatory instincts" and provide an opportunity for it to chase and play fetch on its own when you cannot play, since the ball will naturally roll away when your kitten hits it. Wind-up mice also work well for chasing, but be sure the toy does not have any small parts your kitten could accidentally bite off and choke on.

    Recycled Toys

    • You do not have to break the bank when shopping for kitten toys -- make some out of objects you already have. Old, worn out shoelaces can be tied in a bundle to create a spider-like toy you can use to play fetch with your cat. You can bunch up tin foil in a tight wad and use it as a ball for the kitten to chase or bat around. Even a simple toilet paper roll can be used for kittens to chase down the stairs.
