How to Make a Cat Playhouse From a Box

Making your own cat playhouse out of cardboard boxes is a great way to make a free toy for your feline friend. Cats love new toys, and buying them can be expensive. Instead, make a cat playhouse from boxes that you would otherwise throw away.

Cut out windows and a door.

Take 2 cardboard boxes and lay them flat so you can cut out windows and a door. Place the door on one side of the bottom box, making sure it is big enough for your kitty to get inside. On all other sides of the box, place windows in desired places so your furry friend can see what's going on outside his castle. Use a box cutter for cutting out your templates.

Glue the bottom flaps together with a hot glue gun.

Once your windows and door is complete, assemble your bottom box and glue the bottom flaps together with a hot glue gun. On the top flaps, cut away the left and right flap, leaving only two parallel flaps. On one of the remaining flaps, cut away half, leaving only one side of the flap. Glue the flaps together. There should be a nice little square hole where you cut away half of the flap for your cat to get up to the second story of his castle.

Assemble your top box in a similar manner. You want to make the bottom with a whole so the cat can climb up into the second story. However, leave the top alone so you can make it into a roof.

Make the roof by cutting away parts of the left and right flap to make a triangle. When the opposite parallel flaps are brought forward and glued to the triangle flaps, it should resemble a roof with a crack in the center to allow your kitty some air and light. If you would like the roof closed, go ahead and make the triangle flaps. However, you will cut away the other two flaps and cut longer rectangles out of another box or excess material from the boxes. You will then take the larger rectangles to glue to the triangle flaps to make an enclosed roof.

Glue the top box to the bottom box, making sure the holes are lined up to let your kitty have access to the top story.

Decorate the box. Of course this is optional, but you can personalize your kitty home with decorations. When decorating, don't use small objects that could become unglued and cause your kitty to choke if eaten. Also avoid any kind of decorations that could be harmful to your cat if it were to lick them.
