Cats & Valerian Root

Valerian root, a common plant used in human herbal medications, contains a chemical that attracts some cats. Valerian should not be given to cats as an essential oil, but may be incorporated into toys.
  1. Attracting Cats

    • Valerian root contains a chemical called valerinone which is similar to catnip. Many cats are naturally attracted to the plant.

    Root Oil

    • Pure Valerian root oil should not be given directly to a cat. While it is safe for humans, the effects on cats are unknown.

    Cat Toys

    • Cats may enjoy playing with toys that contain Valerian root. The plant does not attract all cats, but many cats respond to it like catnip.

    Valerian Spray

    • Valerian spray may also be sprayed on cat toys and beds to attract them and calm the animal.

    Medicinal Uses

    • In humans, Valerian root is most commonly used to help with sleeplessness and anxiety. In cats, its medicinal uses have not been evaluated.
