Heartworms are spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes. While both dogs and cats can get heartworms, they are transmitted through different species of mosquitos.
The mosquito species that spreads heartworms to dogs does not typically feed on cats, and vice versa. This means that the parasites cannot be transmitted between the two species.
