How to Get Rid of Skunks and Not Harm My Cat

Skunks can be a major pain for homeowners, especially if the skunks feel threatened and they spray. Additionally, if you have cats as outdoor pets then any chemical or trap precautions that you take might catch your cat instead of a skunk and cause significant harm. So your best bet is to make your home and property as unappealing to skunks as possible.

Keep your lawn trimmed and neat. Skunks like places with lots of cover and shelter, especially at night when they move around. If your grass is short and your bushes exposed, then you're going to seem much less appealing as a place for skunks to congregate.

Clean up any outside food and garbage. If you have outside cats, don't leave their food just laying around outside once the sun sets. Put locking lids on your trashcans, so that skunks can't get to the trash, which is another favorite source of food.

Put a small fence around your yard. Skunks are poor climbers and they tend to lumber, so while a two or three foot high wall won't discourage your cats from coming and going as they please, it will certainly stop skunks from coming into your yard and causing problems.
