How to Make a Cat Sweater

Hairless or short-haired cat breeds may need sweaters to keep them warm during the colder months, especially if they spend time outside. With a bit of fabric and basic sewing skills, you can make an attractive sweater for your cat. If you're making a sweater for a kitten or a cat under 10 pounds, you can make a sweater out of a sock.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Fleece or wool fabric or a sock
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • Anti-fraying glue

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your cat's length from the base of its neck toward its tail to wherever you want the sweater to stop.

    • 2

Measure the width of your cat from the chest's widest point up to the shoulders.

    • 3

Measure the width of your cat's front leg at its widest point.

    • 4

Fold a piece of fabric in half lengthwise. The fabric must be at least as long as the cat's length and as wide as the cat's width. If you're making a sweater out of a sock, you would not need to fold it.

    • 5

Mark the cat's length along the fabric's fold. Measure down from the length line and mark the width.

    • 6

Cut out the fabric to make a rectangle as long and as wide as the cat's measurements. Do not cut along the folded portion.

    • 7

Turn the fabric inside out and sew the open long end with a blanket stitch, using a needle and thread. When you're finished sewing, turn the fabric right side in.

    • 8

Make two armhole cuts in the fabric on opposite sides of the seam. The cuts should be as wide as the cat's leg. Treat the cut ends with an anti-fraying glue if you're using a fabric other than fleece.

    • 9

Put the sweater on your cat.
