How to Decorate for Cats

Cats are playful, curious and occasionally messy. You may need to take account of this when decorating your home, particularly if you have more than one cat. Using machine washable rugs and throws can protect furniture and keep your cats happy, while high-rise shelving units are a useful solution for unruly kitties.

Install wooden or laminate flooring. This is more hygienic than carpets, particularly if your are asthmatic or suffer from allergies. Accessorize with attractive rugs instead; they are easier to clean than carpets if a cat regurgitates food or brings up hair balls on them. Some are machine washable.

Color coordinate cushions and throws with your cat. Felines love curling up on sofas and beds, particularly if the covers and bed linen are fresh out the wash. However, they will soon be less than pristine if your cat clashes with your color scheme and ivory bedspreads don't look so good when they are covered in ebony fur. Try placing washing machine friendly dark-colored throws over beds and sofas if your cat is black, grey or tabby. White cats on white cushions look like a magazine ad and you can run the vacuum over the covers instead of having to wash them every other day.

Introduce decorative litter box covers and cat beds. Luxurious cat beds beautify your home and ensure that felines get their full quota of beauty sleep. Litter box cabinets and covers turn a less-than-glamorous cat box into a decorative feature. They can, for example, be disguised as plant pots.

Protect fragile ornaments, plants and furniture. Not all cats jump on shelves, or chew on plants. If yours does, you can build higher shelves to put ornaments and plants beyond your cats' reach. Place glass objects out of your cats' way as well, as broken glass is easily embedded in their skin. Try putting decorative stones over your plants' dirt.
