How to Introduce a Cat to Dachshunds

A cute, loyal and fun loving dachshund dog can be the right choice for your family, although your cat might disagree. Generally, dachshunds can be a stubborn breed that doesn't always listen the first time, and may take some time and patience to train. This is patience your cat might not have your cat might not enjoy or tolerate the new addition. If you feel you must bring dachshunds into a family that includes a cat, do everyone a favor and make the introductions the proper way.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring home puppy dachshunds. These are hunting dogs, and adopting adult dachshunds that are not used to being around other animals can put your cat at serious risk. Protect your cat and get puppies, who will likely get along nicely with a cat friend.

    • 2

Put your cat in a separate area of the house when you bring home your dachshund. This allows the introduction to take place slowly. For at least a few days, keep the animals apart.

    • 3

Feed the dachshunds on the opposite side of the door from the cat after a few days. This allows all the animals to associate each other with one of their favorite times of day. Keep this up for several more days.

    • 4

Put the dachshund in the area of your home where the cat was and allow the cat to go where the dachshund was. This allows the animals to get used to each other's scent. Keep the animals this way for a whole day. Then, when you switch back, switch the bedding so the dachshunds have the cat's and the cat has the dachshunds' for a whole night.

    • 5

Introduce the animals face to face. Let the cat meet the dachshund for a brief period of about 20 minutes. Be ready to spray water or make a loud noise if there's any fighting. Expect your cat to hiss or ignore the dachshund but don't put up with growling or other aggressive behaviors.

    • 6

Separate the animals again and put them together the next day for a longer period of time, such as an hour. Do not let them remain unsupervised just yet.

    • 7

Continue increasing the amount of time the cat is around the dachshund until they can be in the same room for several hours without fighting. It's a good idea not to leave the cat and the dachshund alone for hours until they've lived together for a few months.
