Instructions

    • 1

Provide a warm area for your cat to give birth, along with a birthing box lined with shredded newspapers. The cat will be happy with the newspapers until the kittens are born.

    • 2

Prepare a birthing kit which should include extra blankets, clean towels, thermometer, sterilized scissors, a heating pad and an emergency veterinarian phone number.

    • 3

Keep your cat calm with a soft voice. Talk her through the process with gentle, reassuring words. Sometimes just your presence makes your cat feel more at ease.

    • 4

Gently cut the cord on the kitten if the mom is showing difficulties doing so. Use the sterilized scissors to cut the cord and be sure to tie a knot in the umbilical cord of the kitten. The placenta will come out right after the kitten is born and the mother cat usually eats it. This is a normal process.

Place the kitten next to one of mom's warm body and nipples once it is born and breathing. The new kitten will start suckling.
