Vinegar and Water
-
A mixture that is half white vinegar and half water counteracts the strong smell of cat urine. Vinegar, when applied over a freshly dried area of cat urine, removes the odor and any accompanying stain. This mixture can be poured into a spray bottle and sprayed onto the affected area.
Baking Soda
-
Baking soda is used to freshen and brighten when cleaning. After spraying the dirty area and allowing the spot to dry, baking soda can be sprinkled over the cat urine. This will neutralize the cat odor so that it is hard to detect.
Hydrogen Peroxide
-
A low volume hydrogen peroxide can work in much the same way as vinegar to neutralize the odor of cat urine and remove any stains. Only a minimal amount of peroxide should be used, making a spray bottle the best method for use. High volumes of peroxide should be avoided, as they can cause further damage or staining. If peroxide is not available, laundry detergent labeled "oxy" typically works in the same way.
Enzyme Cleaner
-
Often, cats can detect old urine spots even if humans cannot smell the odor. Most pet stores offer enzyme cat stain removers that neutralize pet smells and deter animals from marking the same spot after it's been cleaned. An enzyme cleaner will list natural enzymes in the ingredients section and typically mention cat urine cleanup on the bottle.
