How to Remove Outside Cat Urine Odors

A few territorial cats living around your house can create a strong odor as they try to mark their area in your bushes, on your porch, or near your home's foundation. Fortunately, with the right mix of ingredients you can neutralize these odors. According to the Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute, cat urine contains a sulfur molecule which needs to be broken down with enzymes (as can be found in liquid laundry detergent), especially if the surface you wish to clean is porous and cannot be scrubbed. Once you have cleaned the area, take steps to deter cats from coming back to spray these places again.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any cat feces from the area with a shovel. If you leave the feces it will encourage cats to return to the area.

    • 2

Add 16 oz. of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 2 tsp. baking soda, and 1 tsp. liquid laundry detergent to the squirt or spray bottle. Put the cover on the bottle and shake gently to mix.

    • 3

Spray or squirt the area with the solution. Saturate the cat urine area thoroughly. If you are working on a larger area, you may need to mix and apply another batch of the solution. Likewise, if the area is porous (such as concrete) you may need to apply a few batches of the mixture to allow it to soak in.

Allow the solution to dry. These three ingredients work together to break down the cat urine. No scrubbing is necessary as long as you make sure that you have saturated all affected areas with the liquid.
