How to Take Care of Long-Haired Female Cats

Long-haired cats are appealingly fluffy and need a bit more care than other cats for this very reason. Long-haired cats require regular grooming and are prone to fur balls. In basic needs they are very much like other breeds of cats. If you are not at home much, it is best to have more than one cat. Cats are social animals despite their reputation for being independent, and they can get very lonely, especially if they are kept entirely inside.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill one bowl with water and one with dried food and place on the floor. Most people keep the cat food and drink bowls on an easily wiped kitchen floor in case of spills. Clean the bowls daily.

    • 2

Fill the litter tray with litter. Remove solid waste daily with tongs and replace the litter completely every three or four days. Cat litter and waste should go in the trash. It is not suitable for most home composting.

    • 3

Groom your cats daily with the brush and comb. Use the comb first, then the brush. Try to untangle tangles with your fingers but don't pull at the fur. Use the comb, gently, for stubborn knots.

Take your long-haired female cats to a vet to register. Depending on their age, they may need vaccinations or booster shots. A general health check is also advisable. Arrange an appointment for spaying if the cats are unaltered. This prevents heat cycles, unwanted kittens and some behavioral and health problems such as ovarian cancer.

Make or buy toys for your cats. A crumbled paper ball is a toy they can play with themselves. Pulling a piece of string along is a way to play with your cats.
