How to Design a Cat Collar

Designing a collar for your cat is a wonderful way to care for your pet. There are many places now that sell supplies for collar making, and the possibilities are truly endless. When you are in control of the collar design, the collar can be made to reflect not only your cat's personality, but your own as well. It also allows you to make a collar for every season or occasion. If you find you have an affinity for cat collar design, you may find yourself in the position of being an entrepreneur as your friends and family begin asking for designs, and word spreads.

Get a proper size from your cat. This is easily done by measuring the neck of the cat to be fitted, and adding 2 inches.

    • 2

Draw out the collar design on paper. This is called drafting. When you draft the collar, use actual length and width. Width is determined by the size of the cat and personal taste, but no smaller than a half an inch is a good rule of thumb.

Plan for patterns -- or not. Use your colored pencils to decide on the color and pattern, if any, you want on the cat collar.

Map out features. This is the time to jot down whether or not the collar should be a breakaway style, if it should have a bell, what type of buckle and whether plastic or metal, and whether or not you want it to be reflective. All of these factors depend on what you want for your cat.
