Florida Adoption Rules for Cats

Looking for a purrfect companion? Adopt a cat or kitten from a Florida animal shelter or rescue group. Adoption rules vary depending on the organization. A pet is a lifetime commitment, so make sure this is something you can take on before considering adoption. Petfinder is a good on-line source for finding cats in need of homes in various parts of Florida.
  1. SPCA of Central Florida

    • This SPCA, with several locations in central Florida, wants all family members to be involved in the adoption process. Available cats are adopted on a "first-come, first-served" basis and no hold will be placed on them for potential adopters. Applicants must present a photo ID, preferably a Florida driver's license. Renters must provide proof that their landlord allows cats. Young adults living with their parents must submit proof that their parents will let them adopt a cat and bring it into their home. Approved adopters may bring the cat home that day if the cat has already been spayed or neutered. All cats must leave the adoption facility in a secure container.

    • Once a potential adopter decides on a particular feline, an adoption counselor will help the applicant fill out the application. Adopters must provide a list of other pets in their household along with their vaccinations and license information. Renters must provide a copy of their lease stipulating that pets are permitted or written consent from the landlord, while homeowners must submit a copy of their homeowner insurance policy or mortgage. All cats will be spayed or neutered, micro-chipped and current on vaccinations before adoption. Adopt two cats the same day and get the second one for a nominal fee.

    • Applicants hoping to adopt from this animal shelter must answer a questionnaire to determine whether a cat will fit in with their lifestyle. Along with landlord affirmations regarding cat ownership, they must let the adoption counselor know who will have primary responsibility in the household for caring for the cat and where the animal will stay when people are or are not home. In addition to being spayed/neutered and up to date on inoculations, adopted shelter cats come with complimentary one month Sheltercare pet insurance.
