The Birth of Kallibunker
-
The Cornish Rex breed began as the result of a natural mutation. In Cornwall in 1950, a domestic tortoiseshell-and-white short-haired cat called Serena gave birth to five kittens, which all had normal coats except for the fifth kitten. The fifth kitten, whom the owners called Kallibunker, had a thin, wavy coat and its whiskers were coiled like springs. The gene for the Cornish Rex is recessive and is believed to be the result of the mating of two closely related cats. Kallibunker's father was likely Serena's short-haired red tabby brother Ginger.
Benefits
-
The "mutant" Cornish Rex cat is not a monster or abnormal in any way. It definitely looks a bit unusual compared to the common cat but it does have its benefits, for not only is it every bit as sweet as any other cat breed but it also hardly sheds at all, which tends to cause less allergens. Cat allergens are caused by proteins in the saliva left on the hair from a shedding cat.
Coat
-
The coat of the Cornish Rex comes in an array of colors and patterns. It has only one layer of hair in its coat, compared to the coats of common domestic cats. The coat consists of ripples of waves with a soft velvet feel. The one-layer coat produces minimal shedding, which helps to make the Cornish Rex more tolerable for the person who is allergic to cats.
Spend Some Time With a Cornish Rex
-
Because no cat is considered to be 100 percent hypoallergenic, the Cornish Rex can't be said to be "allergen-free" but, for many cat lovers who are allergic to cats, it may be the answer to living with a pet cat. The best way for people to find out if they are not allergic to a Cornish Rex is to spend some time with someone who breeds them or someone who owns no other pets except a Cornish Rex.
Popularity
-
The Cornish Rex is not only the chosen breed of cats among people who have an allergy to cats, it is also one of the most popular cats in America. Cat lovers everywhere not only tend to love the Rex for its different look but for the fact that it tends to be very smart and acts more like a dog, following its owner around and retrieving toys. With the Cornish Rex, almost every cat lover can own a cat.

Cornish Rex Allergy
The Cornish Rex has big eyes, a small head and large ears, long limbs and tail and a sleek, muscular, almost greyhound-like structured body shape. It is the result of an accidental mutation of the domestic cat that can be the answer for many allergy sufferers who would love to own a cat. The Cornish Rex can make a wonderful pet for any family but for some people who are allergic to cats, it can make the ideal pet, due to its thin coat.
