Home Remedies to Remove Cat Urine From Carpet

One of the most difficult and penetrating smells to have in your home is the smell of cat urine. When a cat voids on the carpets and rugs in your home, the liquid can seep into the carpet and leave an odor that can make your whole home smell like a giant litter box. There are several home remedies that can be utilized to eliminate this odor once and for all.
  1. Baking Soda

    • Baking soda can be utilized to remove new or old urine stains by neutralizing the odors. Begin by removing any excess urine from the carpet with paper toweling or a hand towel. Wet the area you wish to be clean with a small amount of water. Sprinkle a few ounces of the baking soda onto the damp carpet and work it into the carpet with your hands or a bristled brush. Allow the baking soda to remain for a few hours and then remove it with a vacuum cleaner.

    Vinegar and Dish Detergent

    • Remove any excess urine from the carpet with paper or hand towels. Mix a few drops of liquid dish detergent with warm water in a small bucket. Bring the bucket with you to the area and blot at the urine stain with the mixture. Never rub at the stain because that will work the urine further into the carpet. Rinse off the dish detergent with some plain water. The detergent will help remove the stain, but you will need to use the white vinegar to deodorize the area. To accomplish this, add about 1 oz. white vinegar to a few cups of water. Blot at the urine stained area with the vinegar mixture. Rinse out the vinegar with plain water and remove with a towel any excess liquid that is left behind. You can also open a window or dry the area with a box fan.

    Peroxide and Baking Soda Paste

    • Manufacture your own cleaning paste with hydrogen peroxide, water and baking soda. Mix a generous amount of baking soda and a few ounces of both water and peroxide into a bowl, until they have formed a paste consistency. Begin by removing any excess urine with paper towels and then rub the paste into the stained area with a scrub brush. Leave the paste on for a few minutes and then rinse it away with plain water. Soak up any excess liquid with paper towel and allow the carpet to dry.
