Cat & Kitten Interactions

Introducing a kitten to an adult cat should be done gradually for the benefit of both and the safety of the kitten, according the SaferPets website. If allowed to interact for short intervals, the older cat will usually accept the kitten.
  1. Territory

    • Cats are territorial, so by isolating them initially, with brief exposures each day, the adult cat may be more tolerant and accepting.

    Fear

    • According to the W.V. Cats website, adult cats may be afraid because kittens behave differently and they may also be concerned that the mother is nearby, which could result in a confrontation.

    Scents

    • Before actually introducing them, allow them to experience each other's scents. This can be done by exchanging items with their scents or by switching their locations, according to SaferPets.

    Supervision

    • SaferPets indicates that initial visits should be brief and gradually lengthened as the kitten and cat get to know each other.

    Considerations

    • W.V. Cats suggests getting two kittens at one time because they are more appropriate playmates. Never leave a kitten alone with an adult cat until you are certain they are getting along.
