How to Acclimate a Kitten to an Old Cat

Introducing a new cat to your household can be difficult and stressful for both old and new animals. You can help minimize the tension and discomfort between your pets by exposing them to each other little by little over a period of several days or weeks. The length of time it takes depends on how well and how quickly your old cat relates to or accepts the new cat.

Instructions

    • 1

Confine the new kitten to a room with her litter box, food dishes, toys and bed. But place the new kitten's and older cat's food dishes near the door that separates them. If either cat refuses to eat, move the dishes to another spot and try again in a few days.

From time to time, take some of the kitten's toys or her bed out to the older cat. This will help the cat become accustomed to the kitten's scent. Meanwhile, bring the older cat's toys or bed into the kitten's room for the same purpose.

After a couple of days, restrict your older cat to one room and allow the kitten to explore some areas of her new home. Then isolate the kitten in a different room and allow the older cat to visit the room the kitten had been confined in.

After exposing the cats to each other this way for a few days, you can bring them face to face. Stay nearby in case either cat becomes aggressive. If they become hostile, continue keeping them separate, isolating the kitten and reintroducing them gradually.
