Is Cat Urine Smell Harmful?

The smell of cat urine can be one of the worst scents to encounter. Unfortunately, since cats use it to mark territory, if you own a cat of your own you may come across their urine often.
  1. Dangers

    • Cat urine is not harmful to humans, although cat feces can contain toxoplasmosis, a parasite that is dangerous, especially to human fetuses.

    Health Risks

    • If ammonia, which is prevalent in cat urine, accumulates in your cat's litter box, it can become a minor irritant to humans.

    Litter Boxes

    • Change your cat's litter frequently to avoid a build-up of unpleasant scents, and so your cat will not be tempted to spray in other areas of the house.

    Varieties

    • Normal cat urine may not smell as bad as the urine cats produce to mark their territory, which contains additional enzymes and ammonia to let other cats know a feline already owns that property.

    Cleaning

    • If you have cat urine on something you can put into a washing machine, then do that and add 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar to your regular detergent. If the urine is on floors or tables, use paper towels to absorb as much of it as you can, then use a mixture of 3/4 water and 1/4 vinegar to remove the worst of the smell.
