How to Remove Cat Spray

Cats spray, or urinate, out of the litter box both to mark territory and, in female cats, to call males for mating when in heat. Spray can have a pungent odor because of the hormones and proteins in the urine. It is difficult to get the smells and stains out once the spray dries. If your cat has sprayed in a place once, it is likely to go back to the same spot to do so again because she can smell the urine if it is not cleaned properly.

Instructions

  1. Cleaning Cat Spray

    • 1

On a carpet, blot, don't rub, the stain while it is fresh if possible. Get it as dry as you can with paper towels, then pour cool water over the stain. Again, blot the area well with paper towels.

    • 2

Mix one quart warm water with 1/2 cup white vinegar. Pour mixture onto the stain. Put paper towels over the stain and place a heavy object on top of the paper towels. After several hours, remove the heavy object and paper towels.

    • 3

Gently scrape the top of the surface with the hairbrush, removing the loose fibers.

    • 4

Spray the area with a pet odor neutralizing spray that can be bought at a pet store.
