Why Do Cats Quit Using Their Litter Box?

If your cat stops using the litter box, you'll know it. Cat urine and feces are potent smelling and unmistakable. Cats are fastidious by nature, so any abnormal litter box behavior is probably a sign that something is wrong. Identify and correct the problem and your cat will return to more socially acceptable habits quickly.
  1. Bladder Infection

    • According to Lisa Pierson, DVM, illness should be considered if your cat stops using the litter box. Bladder stones, diabetes and cystitis are all suspects.

    Dirty Litter Box

    • If the litter box is dirty, your cat may not want to use it. Scoop it every day. Some cats prefer a separate box for urinating and one for defecating.

    Litterbox Location

    • Do not place the litter box in a high traffic area. Cats like privacy and safety when they're in the vulnerable state of elimination.

    Unfavorable Litter

    • Switching litters can cause some cats to rebel. Scent, texture and/or color can all affect them negatively. When you find a litter the cat likes, stick with it. Choose low dust, unscented scooping litter for best results.

    Stress

    • Stress can cause a variety of reactions in your cat, including spraying. Introduce new pets slowly and provide a separate litter box for new cats.
